IMPORTANT SKILLS I WANT TO TEACH MY STUDENTS

I want my students to know how to find credible information in an ever-changing world. Twenty-first century skills, such as media and information literacy, global awareness, and critical thinking, are at the heart of my teaching practices. I also wish to impart a love of reading and teach my students to be lifelong learners. I want my students to see that reading for pleasure enriches their lives!

TEACHING METHODS THAT REACH THESE GOALS

I like to get to know my students as individuals and connect through our favorite books. We begin many classes in writing workshop with quiet reading time. This is a time for students to browse the library and enjoy a book of their choosing. We work on information and media literacy skills with a research project and learn about library resources through a fun scavenger hunt. Students also spend time reflecting in journals they keep throughout the year.

MY FAVORITE PROJECTS

One of my favorite projects to do with my students is our screenwriting unit in writing workshop. In groups, students form their own film production companies, write a screenplay, and film their movie. After filming wraps up, we hold a mini film festival and watch each movie as a class. The creativity that flows from this project is out of this world.

WHAT I LIKE BEST ABOUT TEACHING AT SEVEN HILLS

My favorite thing about Seven Hills is the community. The environment is wonderfully warm and friendly. The faculty and administration sincerely care about our students and each other.
