The Arts

To us, the arts are essential to a rich, satisfying life. Not only are they key to self expression, critical problem solving, and the development of both sides of the brain, they also give us a window into other cultures and their ways of thinking. That’s why they play a major part in the Seven Hills education. With so many thespians, pianists, sculptors, and painters in our midst, our arts facilities stay abuzz with creativity all day long.

We believe that the arts are critical to a complete education. Beyond improving brain development at a young age, the arts provide a unique setting for students to develop their emotional and social intelligence. Especially for children moving into their teen years, the arts provide a path for understanding the world around them, as well as discovering their own sense of self. That’s why we are dedicated to giving students the highest quality experience possible. Through daily participation in visual arts, music, and drama, students can explore their creative sides, master advanced techniques, and experiment with self-expression. The arts at Seven Hills also bring people together. When rehearsing a play, presenting a sculpture at an exhibit, or harmonizing in a band, the arts allow students to connect not only with their creative inner selves, but with all the incredibly talented individuals around them.

In Lower School, our students are exposed to a deep and immersive arts experience each and every day. In the core areas of music, visual arts, and drama, our curriculum strives to build self-esteem and promote openness to the ideas and expressions of others. At the same time, students develop fine motor skills and acquire the discipline needed to create and respond to sophisticated experiences. They are encouraged to take risks, discover new questions, challenge themselves, produce new ideas, and solve problems using skill, independent and critical thought, creativity, and innovation. In our spacious arts facilities, our gifted teachers are exposing students of all skill levels and learning styles to the arts every day, to help foster their artistic development. From their first time on stage to their last fifth-grade performance, and every painting and drawing in between, our Lower School students are building a foundation in the arts that will serve them throughout their entire Seven Hills career.

The fine and performing arts curriculum at the Seven Hills Middle School provides students with a progression of concepts, skills, projects, and performances that facilitate creative thinking and aesthetic sensibility while encouraging them to explore their personal interests and develop their individual talents. Building on the strong foundation they gained in Lower School, students dive deeper into fine arts, participating in choral, theatrical, and instrumental performances, and further developing their knowledge and skills. Students in sixth and seventh grade have the equivalent of 80 minutes a day of arts instruction in the three main disciplines. In eighth grade, students pick an area of the arts to specialize in, exploring their passions in-depth and refining their talents. The arts teach students to engage and persist. They show students how to learn from mistakes, celebrate accomplishments, and press ahead. When they emerge from Middle School, students are confident young artists with compelling points of view.

It’s easy to capture the passion of our Upper School artists. Why? Because they love to create. Lead by teachers that are professionals in their respective fields, they are surrounded by high energy and creativity all day long as they participate in inspiring projects and step out of their comfort zones. Students in Upper School are empowered to take the creative lead on the bulk of projects, creating a plan and artistic vision, and then executing it with their classmates. 80 percent of our students exceed the required 1.5 credits over their four years, making it one of the premier programs in our curriculum. With a wealth of innovative curricular options, rich resources and creative spaces around them, our students are able to focus on their talents and interests and improve upon them over time. Whether they’re composing an original piece of music, directing a play that they’ve written, or showing their art in an exhibit, our students are bringing their passions to life and honing their skills every day.
