Teaching Philosophy

Important skills I want to teach my students

While there are many math concepts I want to teach my students, my goals for them are much broader. I want them to learn how they can use and apply mathematical concepts in the real world, like critical problem-solving. I also want them to learn important skills that will help them succeed in their academic/professional careers, such as study skills, advocating for themselves/ knowing when to ask for help, and resilience!

Teaching methods to reach these goals

I incorporate a variety of real-world applications into my lessons, such as using Hot Wheels to demonstrate how scale can be used to create replicas of real objects, adjusting baking recipes for different numbers of people, and making various business decisions to build a zoo. I also challenge them with math problems that go beyond just repetition and encourage them to think outside the box.

My favorite project

My favorite activity of the year is the “Proportions Olympics.” It takes place right before Spring Break when students have a lot of energy to spare! We complete a lot of tasks — such as jump rope and “trashketball” — and students have to calculate how many jumps, baskets, etc. they would get if their time was extended (assuming their rate did not change). It’s a big hit and the perfect send-off!

What I like best about teaching at Seven Hills

I love working with the students here! They have a clear love of learning and are determined to do their best. I love the smaller class sizes here, as it gives me a chance to get to know each student individually and provide more targeted support.
