IMPORTANT SKILLS I WANT TO TEACH MY STUDENTS

My goal is for my students to be confident and know that they are capable of learning a new language. In their elementary years, I want to increase their input-based language learning. In order to do this successfully, I mostly focus on building their listening skills in Spanish class. This way, they are confident and ready for output-based learning in their future Spanish classes.

TEACHING METHODS TO REACH THESE GOALS

I use a method called Story Listening. This method is developed by Dr. Beniko Mason based on the theories of Dr. Stephen Krashen. Story Listening is where I choose an age-appropriate story for the students’ age, language level, and interests and tell the story to my students using drawings, translations, and gestures to make the story comprehensible to them. This method provides successful comprehensible input and has been proven to have a longer lasting effect throughout the years of taking a language class.

MY FAVORITE PROJECTS

One of my favorite activities is when Unit 3 (fourth and fifth graders) read a book (100% in Spanish!) during the second half of the year. Seeing them feel confident and comfortable reading the book – whether it be as a class, in groups, or independently – is very rewarding for me. It is especially a good feeling when students volunteer to read out loud for the class.

WHAT I LIKE BEST ABOUT TEACHING AT SEVEN HILLS

The flexibility of teaching the subject matter how I see to be most successful. Having a staff that is encouraging, trustworthy, and supportive day by day. And, of course, the kids! I have a blast laughing, playing, and smiling with my students every single day!
