Teaching Philosophy

Important skills I want to teach my students

Reading is a skill required for success in school and life, but it isn’t acquired naturally. My goal is to give students the strategies needed to break the reading code and help them become confident readers.

Teaching methods to reach these goals

I utilize an explicit and systematic scope and sequence that addresses the foundational knowledge and skills that are required for proficient reading. I incorporate decodable texts that help students feel successful because they are only working with spelling concepts that have been taught, as well as dictation practice for developing encoding skills.

My favorite project

I am lucky to get to support students in small groups with continued practice of their most recently learned concepts. It’s always a special experience to see a young learner’s brain start to make connections in reading and writing and see them do things with ease that were previously challenging for them.

What I like best about teaching at Seven Hills

I love the community and small campus feel of Doherty. Families are extremely supportive and it feels like we are working as a team to help their learners be the best they can be.
