Teaching Philosophy

Important skills I want to teach my students

I want to make any process of writing, whether it is academic or creative, more accessible and meaningful for students. Creative writing fosters a unique relationship with language and expression that offers endless opportunities to experiment with voice, style, and approach, while also challenging students to think critically about the ideas and thoughts they put on the page. Above all, creative writing is a gift that any person can enjoy and take on, and I love the chance to share that gift every day with students at Seven Hills.

Teaching methods to reach these goals

I use concrete examples, models, and methods for students to incorporate in their own writing process. Class sessions usually focus on a specific skill or approach that students can practice when they transition to writing time.

My favorite projects

That’s a tough question! My seventh grade writing class collaborates with the theater department to write and film a movie at the end of the year. It’s fun to see students put their screenplays into action. In eighth grade creative writing, students participate in whole-class workshop sessions on a peer’s story or poem. This activity promotes engaging discussion and revisions to writing; it also encourages a positive and supportive environment for students to grow as writers and thinkers.

What I like best about teaching at Seven Hills

The Seven Hills community is such a welcoming and supportive place to learn, work, and grow with others. It’s a place where anyone can discover a sense of belonging and purpose.
