Teaching Philosophy

IMPORTANT SKILLS I WANT TO TEACH MY STUDENTS

My goal, apart from teaching students to engage with and in the Spanish language, is more broadly to help students become citizens of the global community. When they leave my classroom, it is my hope that they will be more accepting of new ideas and cultures and embrace opportunities to engage with those who speak a different language or come from a culture that is unfamiliar or new to them.

 TEACHING METHODS TO REACH THESE GOALS

In my class, I use a wide variety of teaching strategies. I aim to meet the needs of each student through activities that are both interpretive and productive, allowing students to interact with the language and each other in a variety of meaningful ways. We frequently perform skits, watch short films from Spanish-speaking countries, and read about current events in Spanish to engage with the language while keeping studies relevant to the lives of the students and our ever-changing world.

 MY FAVORITE PROJECTS

It is challenging to choose just one favorite activity that we undertake as a class. One favorite is the creating of poems in first semester Spanish III. After watching a short film in which the relationship between two characters centers around poetry, the students create their own poems using the chapter vocabulary and then perform them for the class. It is wonderful to see how creative the students can be! Another favorite is the cooking show videos created by Spanish II Honors students. They use Spanish commands to instruct their viewers how to make a dish of their choosing, then bring them in to share with the class.

WHAT I LIKE BEST ABOUT TEACHING AT SEVEN HILLS

The best part about teaching at Seven Hills is the supportive environment that has been created here. From colleagues sharing ideas and collaborating to develop and grow courses, to students sharing their strengths with their peers to further the learning of all involved, the community here has been unfailingly collaborative and supportive.
