Early Childhood Social and Emotional Learning

Our youngest students are given the tools they need to express themselves confidently, listen and understand others empathetically, and problem-solve carefully.

Cultivating Caring Hearts

Close your eyes. Listen to the rustling leaves in the trees. Pay attention to how you are feeling right now. Mindfulness education is just one of many ways we teach students through the lens of social and emotional learning. We believe the Seven Hills Values, social and emotional learning, and academics are all interdependent. Teaching our youngest students to practice mindful learning gives them tools, early on, to lessen anxiety, improve their ability to focus, and live their lives better.

Recognizing that healthy social and emotional development goes hand in hand with successful cognitive growth, social and emotional learning is an integral part of children’s daily experience. The program, which is adapted to meet each child’s readiness level, builds both:

Individual self-management skills, like the ability to:

  • Respect oneself, care for one’s own needs, and express needs and wants
  • Control emotions, manage frustrations, take responsibility for one’s actions, and respond to redirection

And important social skills, like the ability to:

  • Communicate effectively and demonstrate listening skills
  • Share with others, to cooperate and collaborate, and to enter social situations and participate in friendships, problem solve

Building on the skills acquired in pre-kindergarten, kindergarten nourishes further growth and independence in the same core skills:

Individual self-management skills, like the ability to:

  • Respect oneself, care for one’s own needs, and express needs and wants
  • Control emotions, manage frustrations, take responsibility for one’s actions, and respond to redirection

And important social skills, like the ability to:

  • Communicate effectively, demonstrate listening skills
  • Share with others, to cooperate and collaborate, and to enter social situations and participate in friendships, and problem-solve
