The Seven Hills School 30th BOOKS FOR LUNCH is honored to announce our author for 2016 -
Alexandra Fuller is the award-winning author of five books of non-fiction and a novel. Her debut book, Don’t Let’s Go To The Dogs Tonight: An African Childhood was a New York Times Notable Book for 2002, the 2002 Booksense Best Non-fiction Book, a finalist for the Guardian’s First Book Award and winner of the 2002 Winifred Holtby Memorial Prize. Her most recent book Leaving Before The Rains Come received outstanding reviews, was a New York Times Best Selling book in 2015 and will be published in paperback in January 2016.
Alexandra Fuller was born the third of five children in 1969, during a brief attempt by her parents to live outside of Africa. “A bloody awful dreary place,” her mother called England afterwards. The family moved back to Africa in 1972 to Rhodesia, where the Fullers became absorbed more and more, by that country’s intensifying, violent struggle for independence. Fuller’s experience of that war has informed all of her books which are, at heart, anti-war stories. Later she was educated in Zimbabwe where she experienced the celebratory atmosphere of independence and then witnessed the horror of Mugabe’s rule. Her early experiences of always being close to death and the violent reality of her childhood has made Fuller’s work ring with a kind of urgent honesty balanced by a startling, sometimes mordant, humor that is the key to the success of her work.Alexandra Fuller currently resides in Wyoming. In addition to authoring her books, Fuller has written for such magazines as The New Yorker andVogue, and is a frequent contributor to National Geographic Magazine.
