Writing Workshop Creates Class Story

Megan Whitt’s sixth-grade Writing Workshop teamed up to create a story as a class in late October. Using Story Cubes, a set of dice with a different picture on each side, the class worked together to create a unique tale. Whitt drew nine images from the Story Cubes on the board, including an insect, an alien, and a question mark. Whitt called on a student, pointed to a drawing, and the student had to come up with a line in a story featuring the image. Each time Whitt pointed to an object, another student had to build upon the story. When the exercise was finished, students discussed the story they created and named the five elements of storytelling–character, plot, theme, setting, and conflict—in their story.
