Upper Students learn foundational ceramic skills
Upper School students learned the basics of pottery during Upper School art instructor Daniel Vance’s class. “We’re building the foundation for pottery by learning one of the core skills of pottery. From here, students are able to expand their range to make many different kinds of things,” Vance said. During the class, tenth- through twelfth-graders practiced how to create similarly sized coils, balance and stabilize one on top of the other, and, after their pots dried, how to paint their pots with glazes. After becoming comfortable with the medium, students began adding various designs to their work, from carving designs to experimenting with balance by alternating coils with clay balls.
