Studying the Works of Author/Illustrator Faith Ringgold

Kindergarteners in Doherty art teacher Kacey Watkin’s class are studying the quilt work of author/illustrator Faith Ringgold, who often uses patchwork, quilting, and multimedia in her vast body of work and book illustrations. Watkins taught her kindergarteners about Ringgold’s work before the students worked on a collaborative quilt inspired by Ringgold. “The kindergarteners have been learning about how quilts are constructed and how they are made from shapes and patterns,” said Watkins. “They created two quilt squares, one with a pre-fixed pattern and another where they came up with their own pattern and design. They enjoyed the process and seeing it come together.”
