Seventh-graders Take Virtual Field Trips

Although they were apart, the seventh-grade class took two virtual field trips on Nov. 20. In the morning, students enjoyed a visit with the Cincinnati Reds Program. Ken Freeman, education and programming manager at the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame and Museum, asked students to create a fantasy baseball team using statistics and salaries of players based on information from the 2019 Major League Baseball Season. Students created a nine-man team after comparing players’ strengths, weaknesses, and salaries, and they presented their team at a press conference. Students used math to figure out which group had the best team. In the afternoon, Sophia Herrmann, aerospace engineer at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, Zoomed with students to discuss her career path and her current work driving the Curiosity Rover on Mars. Herrmann said she has always had a passion for space. She attended the University of Cincinnati and studied aerospace engineering and completed co-ops at NASA. Students had the opportunity to ask Herrmann about her career and space.
