Seventh-graders Create Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram
In early October, science teacher Kristin Suer’s seventh-grade class created a Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram, a chart used by astronomers to plot stars based on a variety of criteria. Students worked in groups to determine where their stars fell on the diagram, based on the star’s name, temperature, brightness, and expected lifetime. They then plotted the stars on a diagram on the whiteboard. “This lesson tied into the astronomy unit, where students explored galaxies, our solar system, and other exciting phenomena in our universe,” Suer said.
