Second-graders lay words to rest
In a fun lesson that brought together the Halloween spirit and language arts, second-graders in Danielle Necessary and Cicely Knecht’s classes held a funeral for “dead” words in mid-October. Students wrote an obituary for often overused words, such as “like” and “nice,” then shared a list of synonyms they and their classmates could use instead. Students presented obituaries about the dead words during the funeral service, after creating tombstones for the words.
