IMPORTANT SKILLS I WANT TO TEACH MY STUDENTS

Beyond the basics of teaching students how to read, converse, and write in Chinese, I want to create a holistic experience of learning. This is why I strive to impart the basic skills within the rich context of Chinese history and culture. As students develop their proficiency, I present modern scenarios and current events to sharpen their thinking skills.

TEACHING METHODS TO REACH THESE GOALS

Almost every class is divided up into various activities. I start with a traditional approach, explaining to my students something like a particular grammatical tool or structure we will study and learn. Then, I divide the class up into groups and ask them complete activities that will reinforce that particular skill. The activities will also build upon the skills that they have previously learned.

MY FAVORITE PROJECTS

My favorite project from last year was having my Chinese I students learn and explore the customs of Chinese New Year. But to extend the experience, I had the students visit children in the Lower School and share their knowledge of how Chinese people celebrate this most important festival. It was a great pleasure for me to see how passionate my students were in their teaching roles.

WHAT I LIKE BEST ABOUT TEACHING AT SEVEN HILLS

Having taught in various schools around the world over the last 20 years, I never cease to be amazed by the creativity of my Seven Hills students. They are engaging, and often humorous, when applying Chinese to creative activities.
