Teaching Philosophy

Important skills I want to teach my students

As the Lower School reading specialist, I want all students to acquire the solid foundational skills necessary to become avid, confident, fluent readers. These skills will foster a love of reading and a deep understanding of literature.

Teaching methods to reach these goals

I use a variety of multi-sensory approaches to teach both foundational and complex reading skills. Multi-sensory instruction is a whole brain approach that combines listening, speaking, reading, and tactile/kinesthetic activities. These multi-sensory activities increase student engagement by allowing all learners a way to connect to what is being taught. These techniques are also proven to be the most effective strategies for children struggling or reluctant to read.

My favorite projects

My favorite activity is called the three-part drill. This is a repetitive, multi-sensory practice that involves a visual, kinesthetic, and auditory component. This quick drill is a fun way to reinforce previously taught concepts. Students have fun saying sounds, writing letters in sand, and blending words. I love seeing skills increase with each implementation.

What I like best about teaching at Seven Hills

I love coming to Seven Hills every day and being a part of all of the amazing opportunities and experiences available to everyone. There is a true sense of community and camaraderie between staff and families, and I feel valued and appreciated. Seven Hills encourages students and teachers to take risks, be creative, and celebrate one another.
