Julie DiRoma

Upper School Assistant Director of College Counseling
B.A. Environmental Studies, Hamilton College

In college counseling, what are the most important goals you have in mind as you work with your students?

Throughout the college counseling process, my goal is for students to explore widely in order to find their best fit college. There are so many different types of colleges and programs available, and my goal is to help them research everything that’s out there so they can make the most informed decisions by the time they are seniors.

What practices do you use to help accomplish those objectives?

I try to help students understand all of the factors that go into a college admissions application decision so that students can take the best approaches to their college search process. Each college has different requirements and institutional priorities, just as each student has their own unique qualities and experiences. By making students more aware of the process and helping them understand all of the high-quality options available to them, I hope to do my part to keep their stress levels low.

What do you enjoy most about working one-on-one with your students?

After working in college admissions for many years where my main contact with students was through their written applications, I was eager to work more directly with students. I enjoy getting to know the students and seeing the progress they make throughout their journeys.

What do you like best about teaching at Seven Hills?

Community was a key element that I was looking for when moving from a college workplace to a high school environment. I appreciate getting to know students and faculty in a variety of settings, from teaching a May term to helping the gymnastics team.
