Learning the Art of Stage Combat

Stage Combat experts Jonn Baca and Joshua Pikar led Upper School theater students learning in-person and remotely, participting from home using our Swivl technology, through a stage combat master class in mid-January. Theater teacher Marc Raia said Society of American Fight Directors (SAFD)-certified stage combat is a valuable discipline for Upper theater students. “It teaches concentration, relaxation, and most importantly, being a great team player,” said Raia. “You have to love your fight partner. You have to always look out for their well-being. It is also a skill that young actors can take into any audition or production situation. If we’re doing a play such as Romeo and Juliet, having young actors who have some stage combat training is extremely valuable.” Raia said Baca and Pikar are certified fight directors with SAFD.
