Teaching Philosophy

Important skills I want to teach my students

I am always talking about the idea of being a “culturally literate” citizen in class and rehearsals. Being able to communicate through music and share this with others is about as good as it gets! Young people learn that playing an instrument is not easy and playing with others is not easy. They learn the value of hard work and perseverance, which leads to an incredible reward.

Teaching methods to reach these goals

I use any possible teaching method that gets a point across and reinforces the goal. I want young musicians to listen to as much music as possible from a variety of periods and styles. If we are working on a straightforward swing piece in the Contemporary Ensemble, I want to find at least ten swing charts on their iPods. We learn by following great sound models.

My favorite projects

Spending the entire afternoon giving not one, but two huge concerts in Founders Hall! Working hard and sharing the product with friends, families and other teachers is the big pay off. Having amazing performances is the best part.

What I like best about teaching at Seven Hills

I like knowing the school is behind what I do and how I do it. The kids get my best all of the time!
