In college counseling, what are the most important goals you have in mind as you work with your students?

My primary focus is to encourage students to take risks and consider every option when it comes to college selection and career choice. I view college admission as an exercise in finding the best fit for each student, not one of collecting prizes. When guiding students on this journey, I attempt to help them see beyond college to consider themselves as a whole person instead of as a student only.

What practices do you use to help accomplish those objectives?

When working with students and families, I start by listening. After more than 30 years in education at the high school and college levels, I know that each student and family has a unique story. I view my role as a recommender, advocate, and No. 1 cheerleader.

What do you enjoy most about working one-on-one with your students?

Without exaggeration, I learn something new from every student interaction. I love stories, and never tire of hearing about students’ experiences, hopes, dreams, and challenges. I feel so fortunate to share this pivotal experience, in a critical time in the lives of each student.

What do you like best about teaching at Seven Hills?

I appreciate Seven Hills’ sincere focus on individual student growth and development. I’m proud to work at a school that provides the resources required to implement programs designed to support all learners. Specific to college counseling, I am privileged to work at an institution that allows me the opportunity to interact with admissions representatives directly and to visit colleges in person so that I can provide the most effective service to the families with whom I work.
