Teaching Philosophy
Important skills I want to teach my students
I believe that one of the most important skills we can teach our students is resiliency. Mistakes are part of the learning process, and viewing them as learning opportunities will set them up for success through the rest of their time at Seven Hills and beyond. Teaching students the “power of yet,” to help them develop a mindset that everything can be accomplished with time and hardwork, is crucial for building a passion for lifelong learning in our students.
Teaching methods to reach these goals
It is important to highlight our own learning process to students, and model what it looks like to be faced with a challenge and overcome it. I teach students executive functions, or different challenges students (and teachers) face in the classroom, whether it is their memory, their organization, their self control, or many more. By talking openly with students about what makes school hard, and collaboratively brainstorming strategies to overcome these challenges, students are empowered to face new problems with confidence.
My favorite projects
Every grade I work with has fun projects I love getting to be a part of. From Market Day in third grade, to the genius hour projects in fourth, to the museum project in fifth grade, there is no shortage of exciting things happening at Lotspeich!
What I like best about teaching at Seven Hills
I love the community at Seven Hills. I have seen the way people rally around one another in good times and bad, from the students, to the families, to the faculty and staff. This is a place where you can always count on support when you need it, and it makes it a truly special place to work.
