Important skills I want to teach my students
Overall, I want my students to develop resilience, curiosity, and confidence in their own problem-solving abilities. Whether they are building a robot, testing a design, or rethinking a strategy, I want them to see challenges not as setbacks but as opportunities to learn and grow. Just as importantly, though, I want them to understand the value of teamwork and how listening, encouraging, and collaborating can unlock ideas none of us could come up with alone.
Teaching methods to reach these goals
First, I view my classroom and robotics lab as communities of makers and thinkers, not children. We learn by doing designing, prototyping, coding, testing, and brainstorming together.
Students take on real-world challenges that require both technical skill and creative imagination. Along the way, they reflect on their process, share feedback with peers, and refine their work. I see myself as a guide and collaborator, helping students connect their individual strengths to the collective success of the team.
My favorite projects
I’m torn between the multi-week raising of monarch butterflies and the annual plant sale I co-lead with Project Math.
Both projects invite students to slow down, examine, and care for living things, while also connecting them to cycles of growth and renewal. Whether it’s observing the active, day-by-day transformation of caterpillar to chysallis to butterfly, or seeing a family carry home a plant they’re child has grown from seed to harvestable, those moments remind us of the joy in learning by doing.
What I like best about teaching at Seven Hills
My career has taken me from a public school in Columbus to Cincinnati Public Schools to Montessori classrooms to a creative and performing arts school and now to here. I’ve seen many approaches to education.
What I love most about Seven Hills is the extraordinary support teachers receive here. From the Lotspeich administrators like Matt, Susan, and Danielle to the families who partner with us teachers so wholeheartedly, there’s a shared commitment to helping students thrive. This level of holistic collaboration makes this community truly special.
