Important skills I want to teach my students
I want my students to be open to new ideas, perspectives, cultures, and values different from their own. I want them to be willing to take risks, to make and learn from their mistakes, and to be prepared to deal with frustration and disappointment in a healthy way.
Teaching methods to reach these goals
When students make mistakes in their work, I encourage them to try again, correct and resubmit the work, and learn from their mistakes. When students encounter social conflicts or exhibit an undesired behavior, they may visit “Antarctica,” a dedicated space in our classroom to “chill,” reflect, and utilize some of the mindfulness and guidance class tools we’ve practiced through the year. To widen horizons, open thinking and global citizenship are encouraged through community service and the study and direct engagement with other countries and cultures.
My favorite projects
I have so many favorite annually recurring projects, but there are also circumstances that arise and present unplanned opportunities for learning. For example, a favorite project was a safety video we made and presented to the whole school after one of our second-graders broke his foot on the playground. It was an unexpected “teachable moment” that turned into something wonderful that served the whole school. The second-graders were so proud of themselves!
What I like best about teaching at Seven Hills
I love that I can take advantage of those “teachable moments” and instruct students on those essential skills in a variety of ways from year to year, based on the chemistry of the class, their strengths and interests. I love being part of this community of teachers. I am surrounded by master teachers who love what they do, value our students, and are true professionals. It seems impossible not to be motivated to do my best and bring my best to my work while surrounded by these amazing human beings.
