Nest Building in PK2

The Doherty pre-kindergarten for 2-year-olds students learned about bird nests from visiting science teacher Barbara James. James did a retelling of “Owl Babies” by Martin Waddell and led the students through a nest building activity. While learning more about owls, the students built a nest and discussed what goes into it, like leaves, twigs, and feathers.

Learning about electric cars

Doherty’s Green Team, an environmental club for Unit III students, got to learn about electric cars thanks to Doherty parent Nachy Kanfer, who works in the electric car industry. Using Kanfer’s Telsa, the students learned about how to charge electric cars , that the battery is similar to the one in iPhones, and that they charge like their iPad. The students asked questions and discussed the different models of electric cars, like the ones some of their families have. The club meeting wrapped up with a viewing of the Tesla Holiday Light Show, which made the lights, windows, and trunk move in beat with a Holiday song.

Sock Exchange in Unit II

All of Unit II gathered to have the annual sock exchange for the holidays. The students each brought in two pairs of socks — one for the exchange and one to be donated to the Bethany House. Teacher Julie Guminey explained to the students the reasons for donating socks. Then, seated in a circle each with a pair of wrapped holiday socks, the students listened to a left-right story about the winter celebration books they’ve been working on, read by teacher Sherri Linville. The students had to pass the socks left or right based on the story and then got to open the socks they ended with.

Kindergarteners report the weather

In Robin Taylor-Fabe’s science class the kindergarteners got to try their hand at being TV weather reporters. As part of their unit on weather, the students filmed an introduction and have been making daily weather reports for their Doherty classmates and teachers. Click here to see the report.
