Fifth Graders Preview the Middle School

Lotspeich and Doherty fifth graders visited the Middle School during their preview day on Nov. 18. Students toured classes, watched instrumental ensemble and chorus practices, participated in a scavenger hunt, and asked about what life is like in Middle School.

Author presentations in Unit I

Students in Amy Kulhavik’s Unit I class have been busy writing personal narratives. The students came up with an idea for their narrative, which ranged from family members and pets to explorers William and Clark to pink river dolphins. They planned out their narratives, wrote them, revised them, and edited them. The students presented their narratives to the class from the author chair. “It has been a fun and wonderful learning experience,” Kulhavik said.

Morning helpers build confidence

The morning helpers’ program has returned to Doherty. Older, Unit III students can volunteer their time to help the youngest, pre-kindergarten for 2-year-olds students in the mornings with their coats, washing their hands, and filling their water bottles. “It’s a great bonding element and it’s a special way to start your day for both ages,” said PK2 teacher Julie Brackett, who started the program after noticing social stress among the older students at Doherty. It gives the older students a chance to be role models and have one-on-one time with the PK2 students, who look up to them.
