Seventh graders read books to Doherty students

Seventh graders in science teacher Kristin Suer’s class traveled to the Doherty Campus to read books they wrote and designed about the solar system to Unit I students. The seventh graders rotated around Unit I teachers Amy Kulhavik and Joan Claybourn’s classrooms so the students could read as many stories as possible. The Unit I students have also been learning about the solar system and their maps of it are decorating the walls of Jones Hall.

Polar Bears in PK2

Doherty pre-kindergarten for 2-year-old students in Laurel Robinson and Julie Brackett’s classes learned about the arctic with visiting science teacher Barbara James. In an experiment with chilly water, the students learned how polar bears’ fur and skin keeps them warm. They made and got to play with their own snow. James led the students in songs and stories about animals they might encounter in the arctic like polar bears, walruses, and sled dogs. Back in Brackett’s classroom, students built and explored an ice cave.

Cultural learning in Unit I

Amy Kuhlhavik’s Unit I class had a visit from the Cincinnati Museum Center to learn about cultures around the world as part of their social studies unit on geography. The students moved pieces around a map as they learned about cultures in South America, Africa, Asia, and Australia. They learned how to say “hi” in multiple languages, played instruments and games, and took part in a parade.

warm-wishes

Keeping others warm with donations

To keep the spirit of giving going beyond the holidays, Doherty held its Warm Wishes drive from Jan. 12-20. Doherty students and the community collected gently used coats, hats, gloves, scarves, blankets, and other items. The drive was part of Doherty’s focus on the Seven Hills value of kindness, caring, and compassion.
