100 Days of School

The Doherty kindergarteners in Lindsay Pietroski and Molly Seta’s classes celebrated the 100th day of school with a myriad of activities with the number 100. Dressed like they were 100 years old, the students made necklaces with 100 beads, decorated 100th day crowns, and journaled about what they wish they had 100 of. They created a 100 museum in the hallway outside their classrooms with collections of 100 items they had brought from home. After parading around school to announce the 100th day, the students counted the canned goods they brought in by multiples of five until they reached 100.

Student-led Composting Effort at Doherty

Doherty’s Green Team, an environmental club for Unit III students, is spearheading the effort to bring composting to the Doherty Campus. Working with club advisors Julie Brackett and Kacey Watkins and pre-kindergarten and kindergarten parent Nachy Kanfer, the Unit III students learned about composting and prepared a presentation for the early childhood students. Composting is starting in the early childhood classrooms with the hopes of expanding it to the cafeteria. The Green Team made containers for each of the early childhood and After the Bell classrooms, so the waste could be transported to the compost bin. The team also presented their project to the entire school on the Doherty News.

Building confidence with reading buddies

Third graders in Ivette Crichton’s class visited their kindergarten reading buddies in Lindsay Pietroski’s class to practice their reading and active listening skills. “Sharing the love of reading is such a win-win. Our third grade reading buddies share more than just a story as they ‘buddy-up’ with their kindergartener. The older students learn the importance of mentorship and each partnership learns the value of being an active listener. With every visit, these students share a special bond that they will cherish into their high school years,” Crichton said.
