Third grade visits SunWatch village
Lotspeich third graders visited SunWatch Indian Village in Dayton, Ohio to learn about archeological excavations. Students reconstructed pottery, learned how to grind maize by hand, and explored the open air museum. The reconstructed village the students toured featured five lath and daub structures with grass thatch roofs, portions of a stockade, and a native garden and prairie with plants typical to the period.

Bestselling author visits Lower School Students
New York Times bestselling author W. Bruce Cameron spoke with Lotspeich second through fifth graders and Doherty Unit III students at the Hillsdale campus last week. Students learned about the process of turning books into movies, how dogs are trained to act, and finding their creative spark to write their own stories. Cameron also shared how he got started in television, and his surprise when his surprise hit “A Dog’s Purpose,” spent seven weeks at number one on the New York Times bestsellers list, and 63 weeks on the list overall.

fifth grade visits Middle
Lotspeich and Doherty fifth graders visited the Middle School during their preview day on Nov. 18. Students toured classes, watched instrumental ensemble and chorus practices, participated in a scavenger hunt, and asked about what life is like in Middle School.

SEVENTH GRADERS’ books are out of this world
Seventh graders from science teacher Kristin Suer’s class read their handmade solar system books to Lotspeich first graders. Before this, the seventh graders worked in groups to research and design their books based on their choice of planet for their Unit 2 project. Students could base the book on the planet itself or as a setting for their story. The leaders of each group presented the books to their peers, as well as to Lotspeich students.
