Lotspeich Welcomes Author Latoya Turner

Lotspeich kindergarten through fifth grade students welcomed author Latoya Turner on Feb. 27. In her two sessions with students, Turner read her book “Brown Hands, Black Schools: HBCUs” and discussed the importance of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). Turner also shared how she became an author, her experience as a literacy coach and teacher, and her love and enthusiasm for education.

Third grade finishing playground designs

Third graders are busy bees placing the final touches on their playground designs in Project Math. Students’ designs feature slides, pulleys, steps and ladders, and a multitude of other artistic choices. The young architects immersed themselves in their design work by visiting local playgrounds to study the functionality and creating new and energizing ways for kids to enjoy playgrounds. Pre-kindergarten students will be the first to see the final designs early next week.

Kindergarten learns intuitive reading during Library class

Kindergarteners learned how to intuitively read picture books and gather context clues based on a character’s surroundings during librarian Lori Suffield’s class. Suffield read stories aloud to the young learners, and when there was a wordless page, students would create probable dialogue or sentences that would accompany the pictures by writing them down and sharing them with their classmates.

Second graders 'journey' across international rivers

As part of their unit on rivers in social studies, second graders learned about rivers around the world, including the Nile, Amazon, Ganges, and Ohio Rivers. Second graders in teachers Cicely Knecht and Danielle Necessary’s classes worked together to research, design, and construct their models and were divided into rotational teams, ensuring each student participated in every aspect of the project. The animal team researched and painted animals reliant on the various rivers for survival. The landmark team found landmarks along the rivers, and learned why they were important. The people and community team created a sign describing the location of the river and how it related to continents and bordering countries. They also researched how people rely on the river for various resources such as food, water, energy, and transportation. The river team built the river and labeled various parts, such as the source, tributary, meander, waterfalls, and riverbanks.
