Students learn about the lore of Chinese New Year
Ning Liao, the parent of junior Ed Liao, spoke to third through fifth graders about the lore and longevity of Chinese New Year. “I’ve been celebrating Chinese New Year since I was a baby, my parents have been celebrating since they were babies, and their parents since they were babies. It has been celebrated for over 4,000 years!” Liao said. Liao also explained why red is a lucky color, and loud noises are used during celebrations, to scare the monster, Nian, away. Students loved hearing about the Chinese Zodiac and learning about famous scientists, celebrities, and athletes who were born during the year of the Rabbit. Lotspeich assemblies regularly feature special guests to educate students about a variety of national and global topics.

First grade celebrates 100 days of school
What would you buy if you had $100? What food would you eat 100 pieces or bites of? If you could have 100 animals, which ones would you pick? First graders answered these questions and enjoyed other 100-day activities in celebration of their 100th day of school. Students also decorated hats with 100 colored balls, did math equations, and more while wearing their 100 bead necklaces.

Environment Club exceeds 1,000 piece litter clean-up goal
Fifth grade students in Lotspeich’s environmental club noticed many pieces of litter around their beloved playground area a couple of weeks ago. According to club advisor Kate LeBare, the students were concerned with how the trash would affect waterways and wildlife. “We designed a trash pick-up challenge with the goal of picking up 1000 pieces of litter. This goal was met in under a week! We decided to continue the initiative to see how many pieces could be collected until May Fete. It has been inspiring to see students be so engaged and show such ownership of our campus and the environment,” LeBare said. The students believe most of the litter is left by campus visitors at weekend sporting events, older students who walk through the area, and After the Bell. “Nonetheless, Lotspiech students are learning about responsibility and doing what needs to be done to keep the area clean,” LeBare said. Students also created posters which they placed throughout Lotspeich to remind their community of the importance of caring for their environment.
