Third graders learn theater techniques from Upper Schoolers
Upper School advanced acting and directing theatre class students led Lotspeich third graders through various acting exercises in early January. Students learned basic footwork for sword fighting, communicating without talking, and playing slow-motion tag. Upper School theater teacher Marc Raia and Lower School drama teacher Natalie Bird facilitated the combined class.
Third graders begin planning playgrounds
Third graders in Project Math teacher Jackie Berting’s class recently began their months-long playground unit. Students worked in groups to begin building models of their dream playgrounds, and will soon visit different parks to understand the real life mechanics of creating a functional playground. As part of the project, students will collect and analyze data about other students’ favorite playgrounds and decide what to include in their own group’s design. They’ll investigate the cost of various playsets and identify which equipment could be included within their budget.
School House Rock
School House Symphony visited Lotspeich pre-kindergarten through first grade students during Lower School music teacher Robin Wilson’s class to teach them about different kinds of instruments, the elements of music, and the foundations of American music. The Symphony’s mission is to help students of all ages foster a passion and understanding of music from a variety of cultures and time periods.
Kindergarten visits Newport Aquarium
Kindergarteners in teachers Diane Shulteis, Becky Swain, and Anna Nuss’s classes visited the Newport Aquarium in mid-January to learn more about aquatic life. Students learned about different ocean habitats, how deep the ocean floor is, and the vast amount of different species that live in our oceans.
