Doherty Carnival Returns

The Doherty Campus was overtaken by inflatable games, bouncy houses, rock climbing, tricycle races, and more for the Doherty Comeback Carnival 2022 on Friday, May 13. Thank you to the Parent Community for putting on such a wonderful event.

Seniors Return to Doherty

Members of the Class of 2022 who attended Doherty recently returned to their lower school for a visit. The students gathered in the library as librarian Jo Schnirring gave them a run down on what had changed and which teachers are still there. The seniors watched the video their fifth grade teachers had made when they graduated from Doherty before exploring the campus and visiting their former teachers.

Doherty Mini Pig

Congratulations to our pre-kindergarten runners who completed the Doherty Mini Pig on April 29. Cheered on by their fellow Doherty students, teachers, and families, the runners completed two laps around the soccer field. Good job, pre-k!

Visit from author Hena Khan

Children’s book author Hena Khan visited Doherty and Lotspeich Lower School students in a series of Zoom talks on April 26. Khan, a Pakistani-American Muslim who grew up in Maryland, includes aspects of her life and religion in her books to help children understand that people from different cultures and religions can be similar to them. She shared passages from her books “Under My Hijab” and “It’s Ramadan, Curious George” and answered questions from students. “Anybody who wants to be a writer is a writer. We all have our own way to be creative, we just have to find it. It is important for all of us to share our stories,” Khan told the kindergarten through second grade students.

Vowel teams about town

From creeks to clouds and houses to schools, Unit I students in Joan Claybourn’s class built a town filled with items with vowel teams in their names. Vowel teams are two or more consecutive letters that represent one long vowel sound. The students learned about vowel teams through building, reading, and writing words with vowel teams in them. To build their town, they brainstormed items they could find on a farm, in a neighborhood, in a downtown, and at a beach that all had vowel teams. They then put on their work vests and began constructing their town.

Olympic Day!

Decked out in tie dyed shirts they made in Kacey Watkin’s art class, Doherty students raced on hippy-hops, completed an inflatable obstacle course, and more on Olympic Day. Each unit switched between four activities set up on the soccer field and then played games of tug-a-war. The day ended with Unit III battling against the teachers in kickball with their classmates cheering them on.
