STEAM Event a Success

Everyone had a great time at the Seven Hills Lower School STEAM event at Doherty Campus. Doherty and Lotspeich students completed various STEAM activities at stations throughout Brooks Hall. At each station, they learned about magnetism, how the eye works, polarity, and more. The stations were manned by Middle School students, who helped the Lower School students with the activities.

Unit III explores Glen Helen

Unit III students spent three days at the Glen Helen Nature Preserve in Yellow Springs, Ohio. “The program Glen Helen offers is a wonderful complement to our curriculum in all content areas. It centers around the major themes of ecology, geology, and environment problem solving with an emphasis on cooperation and teamwork,” said Unit III teacher Tracy Hickenlooper. The students explored the 1,000-acre preserve and learned about environmental protection and the relationship between plants and animals, while working together and problem solving. “The experience also provides them with a chance to grow personally in understanding, giving, caring, and sharing,” Hicklenlooper said.

Unit I learns How-To Writing

Unit I students in Amy Kulhavik’s class learned about how-to writing in Language Arts. The students had a discussion about how to blow bubbles and then wrote instructions about how to blow bubbles using transition words, like first, next, and last. To test their writing, they went outside and blew bubbles following what they had written. To tie into their science unit on plants and animals, they also wrote instructions to describe how to plant flowers and then followed their writing to plant flowers around Doherty’s campus.

Maker Mornings in the library

Whether it’s building with Legos, decorating bookmarks, or making 3D doodles, Doherty students have a chance to flex their early morning maker skills. Librarian Jo Schnirring started Maker Mornings, where before school starts Doherty students can complete maker activities in the library. All the activities are themed around arts and crafts, engineering, or technology. She started the program to utilize the makers tools she has in the library outside of regular class time. Each unit comes on different days so she can tailor the activities based on grade level. “It’s so important for the students to be collaborative and work together. Purposeful play is always important,” Schnirring said.

Bees Visit PK2

The Doherty pre-kindergarten for 2-year-olds class learned about honey bees and beekeeping from Doherty parent Erin Fung. Fung read a book to the students about bees and taught them about beekeeping and beekeeping gear. Fung brought in bees that the students were able to look at to enhance their learning. They were even able to find a baby bee hatching.

Field Trip to The Wiz, Jr.

Doherty kindergarten through Unit III students attended a production of The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati’s “The Wiz, Jr.” “The Wiz, Jr.” is a retelling of Dorothy’s adventure in Oz with rock, gospel, and soul music that blends traditional movement from African culture with ballet, jazz, and modern dance.
