Good Luck, Fifth Graders!
Doherty honored the fifth graders for their hard work and achievements as they prepare for the Middle School next year at the Closing Ceremony. Head of School Chris Garten and Head of Doherty Tracy Murch shared words of advice and congratulations for the fifth graders and all Doherty students as they completed another successful school year. Students shared their favorite moments from Doherty this year and performed songs with their classmates. Thank you everyone for a wonderful year!
Doherty End of Year Awards
During Doherty’s Closing Ceremony in the courtyard with family and friends, several students received academic and citizenship awards. Fifth grader Bella Bean received the Hoeland Award for demonstrating academic achievement, breadth and scope of interests beyond the classroom, leadership, citizenship, and character. Fifth grader Anjali Bhattacharya received the Loveland Award for exceptional interest and excellence in the area of English and writing. In this year’s Doherty Spelling Bee, fourth grader Sarah Hassell came in second and fourth grader Henry Liu won. Sarah and Henry were also runner up and first place for the Ohio Math League. For fifth grade for the Ohio Math League, Sophia Liu was the runner up and Leo Cai won. Leo also won the Excellence in Math Award. Doherty’s Student Council Citizenship Awards were presented to Unit I student Caroline Dust, Unit II students Brett Connelly and Valentina Williams, and Unit III students Sarah Hassell and Audrey Vago.
Unit III shares Country projects
Set up throughout the Creation Studio on May 26, the Unit III students shared their “create your own country” projects with the other units. Combining what they learned in science, social studies, language arts, and engineering design throughout the year, students created their own countries. In teams, they decided where in the world their country would be and described its biomes, topography, wildlife, and natural resources. They also decided on a government and wrote their own preambles. Unit III teacher Tracy Hickenlooper also incorporated environmental problem solving. The students had to identify an environmental problem in their countries. “Using the engineering design process, they designed and created a prototype that could be a possible solution. Through this project the students could really be innovative and creative while demonstrating and applying their learning,” Hickenlooper said.
Birds of Prey in Unit I
Unit I students in Amy Kulhavik and Joan Claybourn’s classes were visited by Raptors Inc. and their birds of prey. The students recently studied animals and learned about how they adapt, survive, and live. “We also like to discuss what happens when these animals need some assistance and can’t survive in the wild,” Kulhavik said. Raptors Inc. is a rehabilitation and education center for birds of prey.
Recalling Spanish Words in Kindergarten
World language teacher Kristen Diersing’s kindergarten students decorated the pathways of the Doherty Campus while reviewing what they learned in Spanish this year. The students recalled the Spanish stories they learned throughout the year and picked words from them. The words were then placed on “the wheel of names.” They spun the wheel and whichever word it landed on, they had to draw it using chalk.
Unit II tours Great American
Unit II students in Julie Guminey, Moriah Phillips, and Sherri Linville’s classes visited Great American Ballpark. Their trip included a tour of the ballpark, the Hall of Fame, and a game of baseball jeopardy. The students enjoyed seeing the 4,192 baseballs that represents Pete Rose’s hit record. Several girls located the jersey of their Seven Hills softball coach Todd Benzinger in the Hall of Fame.
