Unit III Creates Robotic Designs

From a cuckoo clock to an ocean scene to an Elvis concert to a gingerbread house, Unit III students showed their creativity and skills with robotics. Students in Tracy Hinkenlooper’s class used what they learned about robotics to add improvements to their creative designs, which they presented to their class in early January. Using their knowledge of lights, sensors, and block coding, each design had a moveable element, like a hula dancer or a spinning rock, and lights, like on lighthouses and airplanes. Some, like an owl and a vehicle, had sensors so it responded to sound or objects in its path. The class will be applying what they learned in their science class throughout the year, Hickenlooper said.

Winter Comes to PK2

As the temperature starts to drop, Laurel Robinson and Julie Brackett’s pre-kindergarten for 2-year-old students are learning about winter weather and animals. The students created an arctic ice cave in their dramatic play area, using bubble wrap to create the texture of an ice wall. They then identified winter animals that they could add to their winter scene and what it would be like to live in arctic temperatures. “It is great to see them starting this phase of creating the scene and helping with the construction now that they are a bit older. It is wonderful to give the students ownership and perk their interest in the dramatic play area,” Brackett said.

Thank you, Nurse Carolyn!

Doherty students made a video thanking Nurse Carolyn Vincze for her dedication in keeping the school safe. Students shared how Vincze took care of them when they were feeling sick and said she is also nice and caring. The video was shared on the weekly Doherty News. “We are going to take a special moment on the Doherty News to thank Nurse Vincze. She has been working so hard to keep us safe and healthy at Doherty. We don’t know what we would do without her,” said Unit III student Logan Bauman, who introduced the video. Thank you for all you do, Nurse Carolyn!

grandpersons

Virtual Grandpersons Day is Jan. 28

Though it cannot be in person, Doherty students are looking forward to welcoming their grandpersons to campus virtually on Friday, Jan. 28 for a day of activities. Events are staggered throughout the day for grandpersons with students in multiple grades. Zoom links and specific times will be sent to families. We cannot wait to welcome all grandpersons to Doherty!
