Doherty performs Winter Programs
Under the direction of music teacher Maria Eynon, Doherty students from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade showed off their singing skills during the annual Winter Programs. The concerts took place over two days with pre-k and kindergarten students performing the first day and first through fifth graders performing the second day. Parents and families got involved too with a sing-a-long to “Jingle Bells.” Congratulations to all Doherty students and Eynon for all the hard work in preparation for sharing the holiday spirit with friends and family.
Fifth graders spread hope through micro-lending
Fifth graders finished their reading of “Home of the Brave” by Katherine Applegate, which follows the journey of a young refugee boy named Kek as he flees violence in his home of Sudan and resettles in the United States. The students discussed the different themes of the book and identified hope as the overall theme. To carry on the theme of hope, students in Tracy Hickenlooper’s class learned about a micro-loan program called Kiva. The students researched potential borrowers, presented and debated about which ones would be best, and decided where to make their loans. They picked four micro-loans to low-income entrepreneurs and students in Kenya, where Kek stayed in a refugee camp before reaching America.
Doherty collects supplies for tornado victims
After learning about the violent tornado that went through western Kentucky, Doherty held drive to collect supplies. Despite the short notice, students and their families brought in diapers, baby wipes, toiletries, and cases of water. The supplies were be dropped off at the Campbell County Fire Training Center and staff there drove it down to those in need. “The Doherty community, as always, rose to the occasion,” said Head of Doherty Tracy Murch.
Cooper the therapy dog visits Doherty
Doherty students enjoy monthly visits from Cooper the therapy dog and his mom, former Doherty and current Middle and Upper School parent Britty Wiles. “These sessions with Cooper are a big part of coping and processing skills and we are so grateful to Britty and the Wiles family for sharing Cooper with our students,” pre-kindergarten for- 2-year-olds teacher Julie Brackett said. In addition to getting the opportunity to hug and pet Cooper, students assist in taking him for walks around the Doherty Campus.
Fourth Graders practice whittling
Fourth graders used plastic knives, paperclips, and pencils to whittle soap in carvings they designed. The activity stemmed from their reading of “Tiger Rising” by Kate DiCamillo, in which the main character learned to whittle from his mother, who passed away from cancer. He used whittling to express important thoughts and feelings. Students explored how characters can be complex and made connections to story elements in their own lives.
Unit I Celebrates Grinch Day
Unit I students celebrated National Grinch Day by dressing up like characters from the book or wearing Grinch inspired outfits. They discussed story elements of Dr. Seuss’ classic “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” and identified the similarities and differences between how they and the Whos of Whoville celebrate Christmas. They also brainstormed and wrote down ways they could make the Grinch smile.
