Six Students named National Merit Commended Scholars, 85 named AP Scholars
Six seniors were named Commended Scholars in the National Merit Scholarship Competition. Congrats to Logan Bien, Saahil Chunduri, Sam Froehle, Abigail Li, Emily Rosenfeld, and Julia Tamai. The National Merit Scholarship Program is an annual academic competition that honors academically talented U.S. high school students. Students qualify for recognition in the National Merit program with their scores on the PSAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. A total of 85 students were named AP Scholars. Sixteen current students and 28 class of 2022 graduates were named AP Scholars with Distinction, for receiving an average score of at least 3.5 on all exams and a score of 3 or higher on five or more exams. AP Scholars with Honor was given to nine current students and five class of 2022 graduates for receiving an average score of at least 3.25 on all exams and a score of 3 or higher on four or more exams. Eighteen current students and nine class of 2022 graduates were named AP Scholars, for receiving scores of 3 or higher on three or more AP exams. For a full list of AP Scholars click here!
Author Ellen Oh visits Upper
Middle grade and young adult author Ellen Oh talked about her journey as a writer, the importance of representation in literature, and the writing process at the Upper School Between The Pages event in The Schiff Center. Oh is the co-founder of We Need Diverse Books and stressed the need for diverse representation in children’s literature. “Diverse books are for all kids because books teach empathy. Reading about kids with different cultures, backgrounds, and families is how we teach empathy and how we fight hate. By simply putting ourselves in another person’s shoes we can reduce our unconscious biases and significantly improve our real world interactions with people who are different than us,” Oh said. Students asked Oh questions and thanked her for sharing her personal stories about racism and mental health. Copies of her books were for sell, thanks to The Book Shelf, and Oh was available for signings.
Learning about Famous Spanish Speakers
As part of their unit on interpersonal relationships on individual and global scales and in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, students in Kathryn Rosenberg’s Spanish 3 class researched and gave presentations in Spanish on famous Spanish speakers. The student’s choices highlighted the contributions to the world as a whole. Topics included Mexican musician Carlos Santana, American of Mexican-Puerto Rican heritage civil rights activist Sylvia Mendez, and Spanish chef Juan Mari Arzak.
Bolton, English class featured in Journal
Head of Upper School Matt Bolton had an article featured in English Journal, the magazine for the National Council of Teachers of English. The article highlighted the innovation he and his sophomore British and Postcolonial Literature class used in the fall of 2020 to study “Macbeth” and perform it via Zoom. Fair Showcases Club Offerings
The Upper School Club Fair on Sept. 13 highlighted the more than 50 clubs that are offered at the Upper School this year. The clubs’ student leaders manned tables in the Hillsdale Commons with information about their clubs. Topics varied from speech and debate to Latinx to vintage games.
