Seven Hills received 141 Scholastic Writing Awards recognitions

The Scholastic Writing Awards recognized 69 Seven Hills students for their work across various writing categories. Numerous students won five or more recognitions. Senior Jenny Hu is an American Voices Award nominee, which is given to the top five out of more than 600 entries across all categories. “I am happy for everyone who received recognition this year, but I am proud of all the students who had the wild courage to submit their work for someone else to read,” said Mark Beyreis, chair of the Upper School English department. Hu and fellow seniors Maya Martinez Diers and Naina Purushothaman won Gold Keys for their creative portfolios. Hu and Purushothaman also won Gold Keys for their critical essays along with sophomores Alice Bachelder, Ronan Blair, Grace Dunson, Timothy Jordan, Ed Li, and Carter Stevens, and juniors Logan Bien, Erin Finn, Abigail Li, Ashley McLennan, and Neel Parameswaran. Local Organization teaches students about healthy relationships

Upper School freshmen learned about healthy relationships, proper boundaries, and consent during a five-day series of sessions in early January put on by Women Helping Women. “WHW is a valued local partner with a curriculum that helps adolescents understand what safe and supportive relationships look and feel like, and empowers students to learn how to set and respect boundaries with their peers and adults,” said Upper School counselor Vicky Hausberger. Students learned about methods of self-care, identified what they value in a relationship, and discussed the importance of honesty and equality, in addition to learning to identify signs and patterns of abuse. “One important element of social-emotional learning is developing healthy relationships,” Hausberger said.

Equity and Inclusion Council attends leadership retreat

The Equity and Inclusion Council had its first leadership retreat in mid-January, where they began to take a deeper look into their leadership styles, set goals for the year, and bonded as a group.  The council set its mission statement as, “We are a group of students whose shared purpose is to further promote belonging and agency by educating the student body, fostering community building, and promoting change.” During the retreat, they mapped their identities and explored how to translate it to leadership, and defined the council’s goals for 2022, said Upper School diversity initiatives leader Amaris White. Council members include freshmen Roman Russo, Ahalya Nambiar, Erin Jackson, and Shlok Mehta; sophomores Aleesha Adhami, Susie Stahl, Nathan Walker, Diana Zhang, and Magnolia Fan; juniors Emerson Rinaldi, Zara Asghar, Jack Ringel, Gigi Hawgood, and Clara Chen; and seniors Collin Chen, Santiago Rodriguez, Liam Belluso, and Rama Alshami

Interactive Trig in Honors Precalc

Students in Sarah Mullan’s honors precalculus class honed their trigonometric skills with an interactive group activity. They were provided with the steps to a variety of trigonometric proofs on slips of brightly colored paper that they had to sort into the correct order. The students improved their understanding by talking the steps through with their group members.

Post-Its bring encouragement to Upper

Upper School students got words of encourage on their lockers curtesy of Kylene Utah’s psychology students. The students planned a variety of events to help students relieve stress the weeks before exams, including a “ping pong and smooth jazz tournament,” glow-in-the-dark dodgeball, and arts and crafts. Students also wrote compliments and affirmations on Post-It Notes to hang on each student’s locker. Though exams finished the December, the words of encouragement remained well into January.
