Seventh Graders learn about Code Talkers
Seventh graders in teacher Mandy Hayes’ English classes read “Code Talker,” which is about the Navajo Code Talkers of World War II. Students are researching different topics related to the Navajo, Indian boarding schools, and code talking and learning about the impact that the soldiers had in the Pacific Theater, a series of battles fought across Asia, the Pacific Ocean, the Indian Ocean, and Oceania during World War II.

It’s your world
During their It’s Your World class, sixth graders explored what it means to be human, to have human rights, and the ongoing global struggle to secure rights as laws. Students discussed qualities like “emotions,” “making mistakes,” and “unique” as central to the human condition. Head of Middle School Bill Waskowitz then showed a video from the United Nations that explained the timeline from the initial concept of human rights several thousand years ago to the United Nation’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1945.

SEVENTH GRADERS’s books are out of this world
Seventh graders from science teacher Kristin Suer’s class read their handmade solar system books to Lotspeich first graders. Before this, the seventh graders worked in groups to research and design their books based on their choice of planet for their Unit 2 project. Students could base the book on the planet itself or as a setting for their story. The leaders of each group presented the books to their peers, as well as read to Lotspeich students.

GSA-Just be you explores LGBTQIA+ history
Just Be You- GSA Club met to celebrate the LGBTQIA+ History Month and learn about the community with an interactive timeline activity. Students examined LGBTQIA+ history from 730 A.D. to present day, such as Francis Bacon, who coined the term “masculine love” in 1623, brilliant trans women of color, Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, who led the revolution at Stonewall in 1969, and when Audre Lorde, a critically acclaimed novelist, poet, and fierce civil rights activist was named as the state poet of New York in 1991.
In addition, a new space for LGBTQIA+ families is being offered as Seven Hills continues to pursue its goal of inclusivity. If you are interested in being part of the community, please express interest here.
