Seventh graders read solar system books to Lotspeich first graders

Seventh graders from science teacher Kristin Suer’s class read their handmade solar system books to Lotspeich first graders. Before this, the seventh graders worked in groups to research and design their books based on their choice of planet for their Unit 2 project. Students could base the book on the planet itself or as a setting for their story. The leaders of each group presented the books to their peers, as well as to Lotspeich students.

Eighth graders enjoy “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”

On Nov. 21, eighth graders journeyed to the Otto M. Budig Theater in Over-the-Rhine to watch a performance of William Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” presented by the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company. The production was a wonderful chance for students to witness professional actors bringing Shakespeare’s words to life before they dive into analyzing the play in class next spring.

Students listened to a recording of seventh grade teacher Mandy Hayes asking students to spell a word after hearing it in a sentence. Students typed their guesses for 40 different words into their iPads. The top five scorers in both seventh and eighth grade, along with top six scorers from sixth grade were announced at the Thanksgiving assembly. They will compete in the finals on Dec. 12 in The Schiff Center. Good luck spellers!

Seventh graders learn about the Navajo Code Talkers of World War II

Seventh graders in teacher Mandy Hayes’ English classes read “Code Talker,” which is about the Navajo Code Talkers of World War II. Students researched different topics related to the Navajo, Indian boarding schools, and code talking and learned about the impact that the soldiers had in the Pacific Theater, a series of battles fought across Asia, the Pacific Ocean, the Indian Ocean, and Oceania during World War II. After finalizing their research, students will present their reports to the class next week.
