Global Education Day

The entire Middle School relished participating in Global Education Day in mid-March. In the morning, students attended a variety of sessions about topics including wildlife conservation, the future of agriculture, the versatility of speaking multiple languages, and many more. During the afternoon, students competed in an “Amazing Race”-style competition where they traveled around Hillsdale Campus and completed a series of challenges. Students “ran with the bulls”, raced up “Mount Everest,” crossed a river, performed an Irish jig, and tried new food from around the world, just to name a few!

Eighth graders participate in leadership conference

Eighth graders Lily Fraser, Sania Zafar, Meghan Sheerin-Day, and Emma Hassell participated in the Jacob G. Schmidtlapp Bystander to Upstander Youth Leadership Day at the Nancy and David Wolf Holocaust and Humanity Center on March 7. During the event, students met with other local middle school students, developed insights into personal strengths and leadership styles, learned how to move ideas into actions, and the process of moving from a bystander to becoming a steadfast upstander.

Sixth grade learns healthy perspectives for relationships

In early March, sixth graders participated in Healthy Visions, a youth development organization hosting programs teaching pre-teens and teens the critical skills and knowledge needed to make healthier behavioral choices and develop stronger relationships. As part of their lessons, students split into groups to sort different kinds of behavior into healthy, unhealthy, and abusive categories.  “Healthy Visions provided our sixth grade students with the necessary and fundamental skills to navigate the complexity of friendships, how to identify unhealthy behaviors within themselves and those around them, and many other strategies for creating and maintaining supportive relationships,” Middle School counselor Dayna Sargent said.

Real Talk presents: Rites of Passage

The Middle School hosted its final Real Talk for the 2022-23 school year on March 17. Students met in The Schiff Center during their advisory time to hear from a panel of students and a teacher who celebrated their coming-of-age ceremonies. Through photos, videos, and mementos, panelists shared information about their coming-of-age experiences, which included a quinceañera, confirmation, a bat mitzvah, a half saree and the Upanayanam. “These discussions intend to assist students in developing a certain level of cultural competency, sensitivity, and acceptance of others,” Middle School science teacher Kristin Suer said. World language teacher Jacky Kalubi and Suer facilitated panel discussions throughout the school year about mental health and seen and unseen challenges.

Sixth graders collect supplies for Turkey and Syria

On March 9, the sixth grade It’s Your World classes finished collecting donations for Turkish and Syrian citizens impacted by the Feb. 6 earthquake. Each division generously raised and donated boxes full of life-sustaining supplies, such as cases of water bottles, first aid necessities, clothes, and toiletries. The donation drive was mainly student-led, from the idea to host a drive to creating posters, setting up donation drop-off sites, collecting donations, making announcements, and helping plan social media posts. Last year’s It’s Your World classes were also inspired by the war in Ukraine to host an item drive.
