Aerospace engineer virtually visits seventh graders
Sophia Herrmann, an aerospace engineer at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, Zoomed with seventh graders from teacher Kirsten Suer’s class in mid-December. Herrmann discussed her journey to becoming an aerospace engineer, challenges she overcame as a young, biracial female scientist, and what it’s like to drive the Curiosity Rover on Mars.
Gender-Sexuality Alliance hosts first speaker of the year
The Gender-Sexuality Alliance hosted its first speaker of the year, Cole Woods, a freshman at Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York. Woods was assigned female at birth in Georgia, where he grew up with a strong desire to be of another gender, also known as gender dysphoria. While earning his high school diploma, Woods had the opportunity to attend a wilderness therapy program outside of Asheville, North Carolina. It was there that Cole came out as a transgender man. Woods graduated from the therapeutic program as well as from high school, and he is currently pursuing his electrical engineering degree. “When you come out, you are still the same person but you’ve accepted yourself even more,” Woods said. The students also learned that the Rochester Institute of Technology has dorms that are gender-inclusive which means anyone can live in that dorm no matter which gender or sexual identity they identify as.
Middle Schoolers spell to c-o-m-p-e-t-e
Sixteen contestants from grades six through eight competed in the Seven Hills Middle School Spelling Bee in mid-December, after scoring in the top six percent of students during their classroom bees in November. Eighth grader Ethan Avera spelled his way through 14 rounds to become the Middle School spelling bee champion for the second year in a row. Avera spelled words such as brocade, throes, chaplain, Jains, and Edinburgh and won with the word appliances. Avera will represent the Middle School when he competes in the regional bee held on March 19 at Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy.
Sixth graders travel through Latin America
Sixth graders in history teacher Andy McGarvey’s class created their own travel agency to promote specially curated vacations in Latin American countries. McGarvey gave students a budget of $7,500 for two adults to spend during the course of their trip, which could be from five to 14 days. Within their groups, students debated what they should include from their chosen countries from the multitude of restaurants in Colombia to the wide array of sightseeing options in Peru. Along with preparing a brochure detailing their trip’s itinerary, students will also present an advertisement for their travel agency.
