Pre-kindergarteners Embark on Leaf Hunt
Tyler McIlwraith’s pre-kindergarten students went hunting for leaves in late October. With a guide in hand, students walked around the Hillsdale Campus to search for and identify the many different types of leaves. Students also looked for signs of fall on their walk. After the walk, students returned to their classrooms to complete leaf-related activities.

Science Students Plant Pollinator Garden
Third- and fourth-graders in Kate LaBare’s science class are currently studying pollination, native species, and plant/animal codependency. On a recent sunny autumn day, in the raised garden beds outside of the Lotspeich science building, students planted native plant species for pollinating insects. “The plants were selected to attract and support a wide array of flower colors, shapes, sizes, and bloom times,” LaBare said. “The garden is a certified Monarch Waystation and National Wildlife Federation pollinator habitat. The area will be used to observe pollinators, grow flowers for learning about the parts of a plant, and natural dyes.”

Second-graders Vote for Buckeye Book Award Nominees
Every year, students in kindergarten through high school from around the state of Ohio nominate and vote for their favorite books as part of the Buckeye Children’s and Teen Book Awards. Lotspeich librarian Lori Suffield helped students participate in the voting process. Recently, she read the five nominees in the kindergarten to grade 2 category to second-graders and asked them to vote on their favorite. She also asked students to rank the five books and give each one a star rating. The official winners of the Buckeye Book Awards will be announced in December.

Early Childhood Center Celebrates Election Day
Students in the Early Childhood Center celebrated Election Day on Nov. 3 by voting for their favorite classroom snacks. Each class in the ECC lined up in their polling place (the commons area in front of the stage) to pick the tastiest classroom snack at a Stingers poll booth. Pre-kindergarten teacher Kiki Schneider even collected her students’ votes in a ballot box!
