Lotspeich enjoys virtual visit with Henna Khan
Lotspeich students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade enjoyed a virtual visit with Pakistani American author Henna Khan in late-April. Khan read her book “Under My Hijab”, which explores the different ways a person can style a hijab, along with all the wonderful adventures they can have while wearing one. Khan also discussed her love for reading as a child, and how it inspired her to write books about her religion and culture to help kids feel represented.

Second grade learns about Visas, green cards, and American citizenship
Dr. Amit Jain, father to second grader Prisha, visited Lotspeich second grade teacher Danielle Necessary’s class in mid-April to share his journey to becoming an American citizen. Jain spoke about being born in India, why people might travel to and work in other countries, and why he chose to become a United States citizen. Students were previously introduced to terms like green cards, resident, and citizen while reading “Stella Diaz Has Something to Say,” which enabled a richer understanding of Jain’s journey.

THIRD GRADERS CREATE Cincinnati LIVING HISTORY MUSEUM
What makes Cincinnati unique? Third graders in teachers Kim Walden’s and Yael Newman’s classes put the city’s many local treasures on display when they presented their Cincinnati Living History Museum projects to classmates, friends, and family in Founders in late April. Students delivered engaging reports on a variety of Cincinnati gems, such as Summit Park and Busken Bakery. Not only did students learn about their hometown, they also garnered new skills along the way. Students practiced presentation development, and strengthened their writing abilities.

Second graders host Arcade Day
Second graders created their own games over several weeks in Project Math alongside Project Math teacher Phoebe Dierkers in preparation for Arcade Day, held in early May. Students planned and prepared every part of Arcade Day including marketing, preparing a presentation to share with their arcade visitors, and keeping track of participation. As Lotspeich students in pre-kindergarten through fifth grade played their games, second graders collected data. They will organize, graph, and analyze their findings in order to determine the total number of games played, among other data points.
