Lego Robotics
Congratulations to our Robotics Blue and Yellow teams for the incredible skills they showcased at the FIRST Lego League Official Qualifier hosted by Seven Hills. The Yellow team, also known as the “Brick Wolfz,” qualified for the district tournament. Project Math teacher and robotics coach Jacquie Berting received the Coach/Mentor Award, and senior Shravan Sekhar received the Volunteer Award. Thank you to all the parents, volunteers, coaches, and robotics teams who made the event possible!

Fifth graders investigate the benefits of games in education
Fifth graders recently started their argumentative writing unit in Danielle Levine’s class, and this year’s topic is “Games in Education.” The main foundation for their research is based on the question “Do games have educational benefits for students?” To gain a better understanding of how games can positively or negatively impact students’ education, fifth graders interviewed students across multiple grade levels in Lotspeich. Students will now analyze their findings and begin to write their arguments regarding the role games should have in education.

First graders learn about Fabulous Fermentation
On Jan. 23, Fab Ferments, a Cincinnati-based food fermentation company, visited Lotspeich first graders to discuss the importance of helpful microbes. Students learned how to make sauerkraut and kombucha and the role a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast (a SCOBY) plays in turning regular tea into a fermented beverage. A SCOBY consists of lactic acid bacteria, acetic acid bacteria, and yeast. When added to sweetened tea, it breaks down the sugar and ferments it throughout one to four weeks. The first graders have been learning about pre- and probiotics, the process of fermentation, and more during their germs and microbe unit in science teacher Kate LeBare’s class.

Seventh grader performs for Lotspeich students
Seventh grader Tennyson Ceron recently performed two classical music pieces on the piano for first through fifth grade students during their Monday morning assembly. Ceron played “Oquirrh Mountains Shining” by Kevin Olson and “La Valse D’Amelie” by Yann Tiersen. After his performance, students asked Ceron about his musical journey, how long it takes for him to learn a piece, and what his favorite piece to play is.

The Good News Crew
This year, the Changemakers Club is becoming the Good News Crew, whose mission is to research and report on the positive news happening around the school. The fourth grade students had their first meeting before school on Jan. 24, where they shared ideas about what kind of topics they would like to cover first. Part of the club’s mission is to encourage students who have a passion for interviewing others, innovative research, and creating engaging methods to keep their peers informed. The Good News Crew will report their findings during Monday morning assemblies.
