Connecting with Switzerland

Doherty students of all ages learned about different aspects of Switzerland and Swiss culture as part of Cultural Connections, an annual week-long study of a different culture. Haile and Jones Halls were transformed to look like Swiss streets and villages in the Alps. Pre-kindergarten for 2-year-old students learned about camping, including setting up their own campsite, and cow farming in the Swiss Alps. Kindergarteners created a Swiss village after learning what they would look like, what the landscapes would be, and what type of shops would be there. They created watch shops, chocolate shops, and flower shops. In groups, Unit II students picked a different Swiss topic to research, like folk tales, geography, music, or sports and recreation. They taught their classmates about the Swiss version of Cinderella, the Swiss sport of Hornussen, and the animals native to Switzerland, like mountain hares.

Flying off to Cultural Connections

Doherty Airlines flight took off with the pre-kindergarteners to Cultural Connections destination: Switzerland. With the help of numerous Doherty teachers and Seven Hills faculty and staff, the students learned about airports and international travel as they got their tickets and passports checked, passed through security, were treated to an in-flight movie and snack, and went through customs once they arrived in Switzerland. Deemed just too young for air travel on their own, the pre-kindergarten for 2-year-old students were visited by pilot Capt. Robinson, who taught the students about his job and showed them the equipment and controls he uses to fly to places like Switzerland.

Unit II presents Wax Museum

Unit II students presented their Black Changemakers Wax Museum to the Seven Hills community on March 7. The museum is the culmination of their research into notable people who created positive changes, like Simone Biles, Rosa Parks, Barack Obama, Muhammad Ali, and Pele. The students each made informational posters about their changemakers, dressed like wax figures of them, and told visitors about their lives and achievements.

Combining Art and Language Arts in Unit III

Unit III students combined what they learned about artist Kehinde Wiley in Kacey Watkins’ art class with the subjects of their essays in language arts. Watkins taught the students that Wiley creates portraits of Black men and women in front of flowers that are important to them. Wiley was influenced by old style European painters, who usually only painted portraits of white men. In honor of Wiley and Women’s History Month, the students researched an inspirational woman of color in their language arts class and wrote an essay about her. They created portraits of their essay subject in the likeness of Wiley’s artwork. Each student presented their portrait and shared why they respected their subject at the monthly assembly about respect.

Irish Dance and History in Social Studies

In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, Unit II learned about Irish history and music from Doherty parent and Irish dancer and fiddler Charlotte Gray in their social studies class. The students got to see replicas of artifacts from the time of St. Patrick, more than 1,000 years ago, had a demonstration of Irish dancing from one of their classmates, heard how Gray’s family immigrated from Ireland during the Irish Potato Famine, and got to practice Irish dance steps to Gray’s fiddle.
