Senior named Youth Poet Laureate of Cincinnati
Senior Gabrielle Walker was named the 2023-24 Youth Poet Laureate of Cincinnati. The Cincinnati Youth Poet Laureate program is a creative writing and civic engagement out-of-school competition that aims to identify youth writers and leaders who are committed to community service through poetry, performance, and social justice. Walker’s application demonstrated how poetry inspires community engagement. Her poetry examined identity along the lines of Cameroonian-American heritage, race, gender, nationality, ethnicity, class, and the sense of belonging. This past summer, she received a national gold medal for her essay, “How to make ends meet: Metamorphosis and Safeguarding Tradition in Jamaica Kincaid’s ‘Girl.’” Congrats, Gabrielle!
Freshman named 2023 NPR "From the Top" Fellow
Ninth grader Beckett Ceron was selected to be a 2023 NPR “From the Top” Fellow and will be featured on a “From the Top” show that will be recorded in Cincinnati this September. “From the Top” features the astounding performances and captivating personal stories of talented classically trained young musicians from across the country and is broadcast on nearly 200 stations nationwide. Ceron also participated in the Guitar Foundation of America’s Mentor program last year. The GFA commissioned Colombian composer Carlos Bedoya to write a piece specifically for Ceron, called “De Esquina a Esquina.” Congratulations, Beckett!
New to the Hive!
Seven Hills is thrilled to welcome Doherty music teacher Jon Newlie and Upper School drama teacher Thomas Peters to the school. Newlie began teaching music at Doherty in April 2023. Before Seven Hills, he served as a long-term substitute for Band at Little Miami Junior High, was the percussion director for the Lebanon City Schools, and was a general music teacher for pre-kindergarten through eighth grade at St. Luke Catholic School. Peters started his position at Seven Hills in August 2023. Before coming to Seven Hills, he was a theater and speech teacher, theater director, and auditorium stage manager at Summit Country Day School and Walnut Hills High School. He has received the League of Cincinnati Theaters MVP Award, Acclaims Theater Educator of the Year Award, and the Acclaims Theater Educator Judges Award. Welcome to Seven Hills!
Doherty Students create community bee hives
Doherty students created bee hives inspired by the concept of community as a collaborative art project in art teacher Kacey Watkins’ class. Before diving into the project, students discussed what their idea of a community is, how they contribute or would like to contribute to the Seven Hills community, and what shapes or images suggest community. Then, students read “The Honeybee” by Kirsten Hall and Isabelle Arsenault, which discusses how a beehive shows various parts of what makes a community, such as communication, collaboration, and companionship. After reading the book, students decorated their own honeycombs and bees and combined them into their very own Seven Hills beehive.
