Upper School Theatre Rocks “American Idiot”

The Seven Hills Upper School Theatre Department performed Green Day’s “American Idiot” in early May on The Schiff Center main stage. The brash Tony Award-winning punk-rock musical lit up the stage from start to finish. The kinetic cast dressed in punk-grunge from head to toe, depicted the intended angst from the 2010 Broadway production. “The cast, crew, and band has worked extremely hard on this challenging ‘rock opera’, which features a student and faculty-driven live rock band,” said theatre teacher Marc Raia. Congratulations to all students, including Audrey Howard, Aditi Sinha, Elias Buttress, Mikul Wyer, Wendy Woffington, Nora Donovan, Isabelle Anthony, Alice Bachelder, Noah Clark, Grace Dunson, Susie Stahl, Max Steinman, Margaret Tenney, Lena Wilson, Alex Burke, Mallory Gravitt, Timmy Jordan, Jason Knarr, Dan Dorff, Shravan Sekhar, Elyse Stieby, Molly Francis, Liam Belluso, Lucas Wall, Grayson Halonen, Will Kersting, and Anand Patil.

Middle School Presents “An Evening of Scenes”

Middle Schoolers recently staged “An Evening of Scenes” in the Black Box Theater. The show was livestreamed for the audience. Middle School theater teacher Jacob Hauser said the play featured scenes and monologues in lieu of a full play. Each scene or monologue followed social distancing guidelines. “This production gave each student involved a significant chance to shine, which they did,” Hauser said. “Performing in the Blackbox also allowed our eighth-grade tech students the opportunity to design the lights for each piece. I was most impressed by how quickly they were able to bring everything together in the shortened rehearsal period of just four weeks.”

Doherty Virtual Art Show

Doherty parents have an opportunity to buy beautiful art that has been matted, framed, and is being showcased in the Doherty Virtual Art Show with the help of Doherty art teacher Kacey Watkins. “The students have created a spectacular Virtual Art Show celebration,” said Watkins. “Each student has their own framed masterpiece displayed online.” All pieces are available for purchase with proceeds going to the Cincy Book Bus. The Book Bus buys children’s books for schools in low-income areas to help build classroom libraries and give those students the opportunity to experience the joy of reading. Watkins said students were able to see the bus and meet Melanie Moore, the owner of the Book Bus. Visit the Art Show, which is ongoing, here.

Unit I Studies and Performs Folk Songs

Unit I students recently studied and sang the folk song, “John the Rabbit,” in Doherty music teacher Maria Eynon’s class. Eynon, who is teaching the students about the way folk songs evolve and travel geographically, shared that the song originated in Great Britain and moved, over decades, to the Midwest region of the United States. Students used drum sticks to tap out rhythms from the song as they sang and moved through the music classroom.
