Sustainability Efforts in Upper
March 2, 2026
From recycling dry-erase markers to teaching their peers ways to protect the environment, sustainability efforts are going strong in Upper.

Throughout the school year, the Upper School Sustainability Council has spearheaded numerous initiatives for Seven Hills. To encourage students across divisions to reduce the amount of waste created in the lunch room, the council held a friendly competition between Lotspeich and Upper to see who could learn and use the new recycling and composting bins in Founders Hall faster.
Throughout the year, student volunteers and history teacher Brian Wabler have helped reduce the amount of honeysuckle, an invasive species, through the Honeysuckle Harvest. Upper and Middle School teachers have been able to use the newly cleared space as an outdoor learning area.
Sophomores Bianca Patel and Maren Osher taught students in the Lotspeich Early Childhood Center about composting. The lesson was part of their proposal “The Seven Hills Composting Project” through the Hamilton County Conservation District’s Caring for Our Watersheds Competition. Their proposal earned a special recognition for having an educational aspect for younger students.

For the juniors, the upcoming Experiential Learning Day on March 6 will be a Sustainability Day with events on and off campus.
